Golf Swing Tips

To improve your golf game, it’s vital that you take golf lessons. Golf is a sport that is almost impossible to learn without some sort of guidance. Luckily, there are golf experts around the country whose job it is to teach golf. By taking golf lessons, you can drastically improve your game in a relatively short amount of time. Taking golf lessons can be an expensive, time-consuming effort. And like any good or service that will cost money and require time, you should be careful before you buy.  Golf can be a really costly game to play and it is reasonable to assume that you have invested a fair amount of money in your equipment – golf clubs, golf bag, golf balls, golf clothing, golf cart etc; – therefore doesn’t it make common sense for you to learn how to use them to their advantage and improve your skills and capabilities?

Dave Pelz’s Putting Bible – golf’s least understood skill.

The yips are nothing to be ashamed of. In fact the three necessary characteristics – intelligence caring and lots of hard work and practice – are all what I

362 Face Your Special Problems would consider prerequisites for greatness. While you don’t have to be intelligent to be a good putter I think you do have to be intelligent to be a good putter for a long period of time. All humans have good and bad performance periods and to get past the bad times you must be smart enough to know what and why you do things and how to fix things when they go wrong. You also need to know what not to fix (or change).

Johnny Miller was one of the best ball-strikers I ever saw but he drove himself from competitive golf because of the putting yips. Arnold Palmer struggled to be competitive for the last 15 years of his career-during which time he hit the ball tremendously well – but suffered with the yips on and off. These two players plus Hogan and many others have as much talent as a player could ever want. They are all smart and they all care about and practice their games. But they didn’t heat the yips. Not because the yips can ‘t he beaten but because they didn ‘t know how to beat them. The key to solving the yips as with many other problems is to first understand you have them and then learn how to fix them.

I see golfers cure their putting yips every year. Of course it takes time effort and patience but they can be conquered. As evidence I give you Beth Daniel who won nine tournaments worldwide (Figure 14.9.3) only one year after coming to me with a serious case of the yips (which had caused her to miss 10 cuts in a row and many two-footers). Beth conquered the yips as many golfers have – by persistent hard work to improve her stroke in a system that allowed her to putt in a consistent and rhythmic ritual.

Here are my recommendations for conquering the yips:

• To lag a putt is to minimize thoughts of holing it instead concentrating on stopping the ball as close to the proper distance and as close to the hole as possible thus minimizing the possibility of three-putting (which is first priority).

Lag putters (golfers who always seem to be lagging their putts) usually leave more than half of their putts short which is not good when you are trying to hole the maximum percentage of makable putts (those inside 30 feet). But to be a good lag putter from outside 35 feet is one of putting’s

The picture at left shows the correct setup position from above. You can see the correct shoulder turn by looking at this picture in conjunction with the picture directly below. Notice that there is no horizontal movement. There should also be no vertical movement. Everything rotates around the spine. Focus on rotating the right side of your body around your spine. The left side will move into place automatically.
