The course is one of the most challenging in the region. Although not the longest course around, it is probably the most picturesque. The tree-lined fairways make accuracy of paramount importance. The countless mature trees give a secluded feel. You would not know that you were in the middle of North-West London. The peace and tranquillity is only broken by the occasional woodpecker or shout of ‘Fore’!

Stability and Rhythm: Two Artistic Fundamentals

6.1 Where Science Meets Art

In the old days when I started talking in my schools about acceleration stability and rhythm in putting I realized that I had reached the place where science and art begin to meet. Golfers rarely understand how the concepts of stability and rhythm apply to golf and they think acceleration is something that applies only to race cars.

Even though acceleration is an important aspect of a good putting stroke I no longer talk about it or teach it in our schools because golfers misinterpret it then mess up their strokes as a result. It is a fact that a putter accelerating through impact will maintain club-ball contact for a slightly longer time than will a putter traveling at the same velocity but decelerating at impact. It also is true that the greater the force pulling the shaft and the head of the putter through impact the more stable that clubhead becomes and the more it resists turning and wobbling if the ball isn ‘t hit squarely on the sweetspot. But while both statements would seem to mean that acceleration should be good for putting I have found that teaching it only makes golfers putt worse not better.

It didn’t take me long to figure out the reason. When golfers try to accelerate their putter through impact they instinctively do it with the muscles of their hands and wrists (Figure 6.1.1). But as I mentioned in Chapter 5 golfers who control their putters with their hand muscles will have difficulty performing under pressure. And this is exactly what happened when I taught them to accelerate. At first they saw some success and felt that they were making more putts.

However as soon as they faced any real pressure their adrenaline-strengthened muscles took over and the putts exploded past the hole. As you can imagine it takes only a few explosions to create a fear of the next one so they reverted back to

The basic idea is to keep your conscious mind busy seeing your perfect stroke during your practice swings as a way to build your confidence and form a clear picture in your mind’s eye. Once you see and feel how you want to stroke your putt the trick becomes simply keeping your conscious mind busy and out of the way (for example thinking about your preshot ritual) so your subconscious can do its thing. 4.13 The Best Way to Putt

A quick review. The easiest way to roll balls at controlled speeds on your intended line is to use a True Roller. Mechanically the simplest way to swing a putter along your Aimline is to straddle the line and use a croquet-style putting stroke.

But the best legal way to putt is to take a perfectly fit putter and aim it accurately from a square setup with your feet knees hips shoulder and eye flow-lines aligned parallel-left of your Aimline; put your eyes vertically over the line and your hands vertically under your shoulders; then stroke your putt solidly on the sweetspot with a dead-hands pure-in-line stroke keeping your putterface square to the Aimline (Figure 4.13.1). The chest and shoulders shouldn’t be turning, unless your arms are turning with them. In other words, you want to start your swing with a shoulder turn, but your arms should start swinging at EXACTLY the same time. They are an extension. They are connected. Furthermore, your arms shouldn’t be swinging unless your chest is rotating. Don’t start swinging your arms without starting the shoulder turn. They are connected. Your left elbow remains locked throughout the entire swing. When you complete your shoulder turn, your arms should stop as well. The goal will be to have your left arm exactly parallel to the ground. Your elbow is still locked. When it gets there…STOP. Do not continue to swing your arms.
