Portsmouth Golf Club was formed in 1926 and since 1972 has played over the Portsmouth City Council course on Portsdown Hill overlooking Portsmouth, Southsea and Langstone Harbour. The club is a private members club with over 500 members comprising men, ladies, juniors and male veterans and is fully affiliated via the Hampshire County Union to the English Golf Union and the English Ladies Golf Association. We have an extensive competition calendar in all categories and welcome new members of all categories and all standards. The course is now leased from Portsmouth City Council by Glendale Golf who offer a very flexible system of season tickets and green fees

5.6 Two Types of Muscle Memory

If you ever learned how to ride a bicycle even if it was 30 years ago you will never forget the feeling of how to ride. You may be a little rusty and momentarily forget how to balance your body on the bike but in just a few moments you can ride away almost as if you’d never stopped. This is a good example of long-term muscle memory which is stored in your brain and never forgotten.

Everyone has a second kind of muscle memory called short term – thoughts and sensations that disappear from our bodies and minds at a rate of about 30 percent every eight seconds. Say someone pinches you on the arm: You feel the pinch and it hurts. But it hurts only for a little while the pain fades away and in almost no time the pain is gone and you feel better. The memory of how badly you hurt or what the hurt actually felt like fades quickly. In eight seconds about one third of the feeling is lost. In the next eight seconds another third of what is left goes and on and on until there is nothing left to feel. Most humans operate with this same eight-second clock so it is called the “time constant” of short-term memory. It is also a good measure of your loss of kinesthetic awareness involved in the feel of your golf swing or putting stroke.

Both long- and short-term muscle memories are important in putting. Once you learn and know the feeling of your perfect putting stroke it will reside in your long-term memory and never totally be forgotten. You may not be able to produce it at will immediately after a long layoff but with a little work you’ll do it and just as important you will recognize it. The memories of the good stroke will come flooding hack just the way they do when hopping on a bicycle after a long layoff. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that the short-term feel for your putting stroke motion is subject to the short-term time constant of eight seconds. When does this come into play? As you are learning and practicing putting touch and on the course as you make practice strokes in preparation for the real one.

4.5 Power Source

Your power source is the part of your body that supplies the power to control and move the putter through the impact zone of your stroke. The muscles you use to control your putter determine your putting power source. The three most common power sources used in putting are: (1) the small muscles of the fingers hands wrists and forearms; (2) the arms and shoulders; and (3) body motion.

Most golfers control their putting with the small muscles of their hands wrists and forearms. These are the muscles that control most of the things we do in life – hitting things twisting things moving things – so using our hands and forearms in golf is instinctive and therefore feels natural to us. 68 The Seven Building Blocks of Stroke Mechanics ralness don’ t necessarily mean correct. And in fact trying to find a way to putt that is both initially comfortable and natural usually leads to disaster.

Supplying the power which determines how fast and how far your putts will roll from the muscles of your wrists hands and fingers (Figure 4.5.1) is bad. Wrist motion (hinging) causes putterface angle variations and hand and wrist muscles lend to tighten up and not work well under even slight pressure. But powering your putts with these muscles also brings an added complication: It’s not had all the time.

You can practice putting this way for years and as long as you putt on the course exactly the way you do in practice – relaxed and calm – things will be reasonably okay. But wait until you get really excited. When your heart begins to beat faster because a putt really matters your body naturally produces adrenaline which makes all of your muscles stronger. Then all your practice goes out the window because the muscles that control your putting power are now stronger than they ever were on the putting green. Even if your stroke feels the way it did in practice the adrenaline-induced extra power will cause it to provide the wrong amount of energy to your putts and produce bad results on the course.

This is a different view of the complete follow through. Your forearms are crossed, and that is the sign that you have completed the follow-through correctly Keep your head perfectly still during the entire swing This is the last crucial step that you must master. It’s by far the easiest step, but ironically it will produce the most results. The biggest problem is that you don’t always know when you are moving your head. You may find that swinging easier helps keep the head still, but other than that it is just something that you will have to really concentrate on.
